Randy Travis pleases crowd
By Bobbie J. Clark • bobbieclark@gannett.com • September 28, 2009
With little more than a couple of plucks on his guitar and the deep country twang
of his voice, country/gospel singer Randy Travis coaxed the audience at Summer Grove
Baptist Church into clapping and singing along during his concert Sunday night.
Travis played a set of mostly gospel songs during his performance, which drew nearly
2,000 people.
Save for a few pews in the very back, the sanctuary at Summer Grove’s sprawling,
west Shreveport campus was filled with people of all ages, from infants to the elderly.
He played a variety of old-time, country gospel songs with lyrics like “make plans
while you’re living/ it’s too late when you’re dead. …”
Between songs he told anecdotes and cracked a few jokes that helped set up the next
number. His set list included “I’m Ready,” “He’s My Rock, My Sword, My Shield” and
“Open the Eyes of my Heart Lord.”
Prior to the latter, he told a story about his record executives wanting him to perform
“praise and worship” songs, which he said were “pop.”
He then quipped, “We couldn’t go pop with a mouthful of firecrackers.”
However, his opening act had no problem with a more contemporary style.
Monroe-West Monroe native Naomi Carroll warmed up the crowd for Travis, with some
of her original songs. They included “All that Matters” and the title-track to her
first solo album, “Becoming.” Carroll said the song was inspired on her birthday
about six years ago.
She felt that she had failed in all aspects of her life. But her husband and God
helped bring her back. “My only hope is in Jesus,” she said. “That’s it.”
Skip and Courtney Young made the trek all the way from West Monroe to listen to Travis
and Carroll.
They both said they were fans of country and gospel music, and relished the opportunity
to hear Carroll’s “inspirational set.”
Great joke Linda, love it. Mary
I've heard the two jokes. The one about the dresses and the other about Bill Gates. But, I can't remember them now. Randy always tells great jokes during his shows.
And did he ever!!!. It was great. He played for two hours or so taking all kinds of requests from the crowd, everything from don't Ever Sell Your Sattle, Faith in You of which he did one verse and chorus of and even performed Every Head Bowed from ATB stating it was the first time they had played it live anywhere. I don't need to tell you he sounded wonderful.

That is interesting then if he's done it several times. He even commented how he hoped they'd make it through as they'd had not done it before. I know randy forgets things but wouldn't have thought he'd forget something he's done several times. I realize I didn't see him that much this past year but know he hadn't sung it at the shows i was at. it was still very enjoyable just the same of course. I was just glad to see him again.

Hmmm, I am trying to remember which concert he did it at before St Louis Family Church. I know it was in 2008, probably towards the end of the year. My son loves that song and I had hoped that since it was in the set list towards the end of the year that he might still be doing it when I took him to see Randy in March. Jacob was so happy when he sang it at the church. And he was even happier when he sang Pray for the Fish.
Ok, I guess I was having my own senior moment last night. I was sound asleep when I suddenly woke up and realized that I was mistaken about which song Randy was singing last year. It was not Every Head Bowed but Everything I Own Has Got a Dent. But one thing I am absolutely positive about is that he did sing Every Head Bowed at St Louis Family Church in May. I think that it is the only time I have heard it live.
What I really want to know is why I can't turn my brain off at night so I can get a good nights sleep. I don't seem to have a problem turning it off during the day!
Yep, he probably did do it at the church you went to and just forgot. I know so often he has said that Family Churchh also was the first place he had ever done rise and Shine, the song itself, when in fact had actually done it at a church here in Arlington, TX first so there is no doubt he does forget from time to time. Don't we all.
Yes, I do recall him doing Everything I Own Has Got a Dent in It last year; I'm with Jacob, wish they could have kept that one in. The only thing they did Saturday night from ATB was Don't Think Twice if I'm remembering correctly.. He only told two jokes Saturday evening - the one about Lib buying two new dresses and the bill Gates going to Heaven one. Sunday the joke he shared was the fishing joke about a couple of guys catching so many fish, they wanted to "mark the spot."

I love Randy's jokes he tells during his concerts. He's used a couple that I have given him years ago. But I have not heard the two you mentioned (1) about Lib buying two new dresses or
(2) the Bill Gates one. If it wouldn't ruin it for others - I'd like to hear those. Thanks.
Dr Don Givens
DRGivens, I'll mail them to you via PM to not spoil them for others. I've always been fearful of that when posting them on here as others may not always want to read them if they are planning on going to a show.
they've used a couple of them i've sent them also, one in particular about the little boy in the church lobby asking about the men that died in the service. I've always liked that one.
Another i sent them and have never heard, i really always liked was the wife who one day came down stairs late and the coffee wasn't made. Her husband, a bit exasperated asked why it took her so long; he wanted his coffee.
"well," she exclaims "whatmakes you think it is always the wife's jjob to make the coffee? You could have made it and been drinking it."
"Because it's always been that way" he replied.
"Yes, but technically it isn't the wife's job; it even says so in the Bible that it is the man's job."
"And just where does it say that?" he asks.
She quickly pulls out the bible, opens it to a page and points at the page "Right there' she replies.
As he glances to where she is pointing, it reads "Hebrews."
Okay, I Hope you got it and enjoyed that one.
Afriend of mine initialy sent it to me.

It sounds like a wonderful concert, I wish I could have been there. However, I have heard him perform Every Head Bowed live, so I guess he just forgot that he performed it last year.
RTFan2006
Well, it was the first I'd heard it but that's okay. Wouldn't be the first time Randy's ever forgotten anything and he'd be the first to admit it (lol).

Yep he forgot! I have heard him sing it several times. The last time was at the St Louis Family Church just four months ago.
